We don't want a major road located so close to our residential neighbourhood

The Department of National Defense has commissioned an engineering study to examine the concept of converting Tamke Road into a full blown highway connecting highway 11 to highway 219.    This highway would be designed as a An SMHI Design Class 20 roadway with a 3.7 m asphalt concrete driving  lane, a 3.0 m  or a 2.0 m asphalt concrete shoulder.  The anticipated speed limit for the highway would be 100 kilometers per hour

Here is the map of the two options.  Option 1a and 1b are the cheaper options and would route the highway up 3055.  Option 2a and 2b would see an extension of Tamke road all the way to highway 219 (through the Salvation Camp, Brightwater, and over/across the creek.  (The only difference between the a and b option for both routes is the width of the shoulders  - 2 metres vs 3 metres).  The report calls for an average daily traffic count of 1800 vehicles each day – that over 1 every minute!!  They also estimate that 20% of that traffic would be semi trailer trucks.

Regardless of which option is selected, this highway would result in increased traffic through our Hamlet on 3055 and 3054 by people using the new highway as a shortcut into the city.

The construction would include the creation of  road drainage evaporation ponds to collect the rainwater from the road.  The largest of these would be located just south of the current intersection of 3054 and Tamke.  This water would be the runoff from the highway and would be laden with road salts and oil and would  contaminate the groundwater on which many residents rely.

The environmental study does not mention anything about deer.  As you all know, the military range has thousands of deer living within its limits.  We have all seen the deer strikes that occur along highway 11 in the distance between the north and south perimeters of the range.  And that is a highway that is 1 kilometer from the edge of the range.  Can you imagine the carnage on a major highway right up against its northern perimeter?
